Knowledge is Power!

“Years ago, the Kansas City Police Department’s use of janitors and administrative help to translate when officers encountered Spanish speakers could have been labeled resourceful. But the need for police officers fluent in Spanish has long far exceeded such in-a-pinch fixes.

So Chief Jim Corwin deserves praise for supporting an intensive Spanish language program that 21 officers began this month. Three days a week, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., the officer-students drill on reading, writing and speaking Spanish. Two to three hours of homework is expected nightly. Hoping to gain the most on-the-street impact from the language classes, only patrol officers were allowed into the first class.”
