“While Ana Castillo is, by definition, a Chicano author, she would prefer to be called just an author. And this seemingly benign nomenclature that also breeds phrases like “best Chicano author since …” and “the most daring and experimental of Latino artists” is perhaps indicative of the larger derisive pigeonholing and stereotyping that makes this writers works worth reading in the first place.
Castillo is the third author up in a six-part series of author talks and readings presented by the Aspen Writers Foundation. This Winter Words event, dubbed “Apres Ski for the Mind,” takes place Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the Given Institute. “
