Knowledge is Power!
“Fernanda Cruz, a longtime resident of Redlands who taught at the old Bryn Mawr and Mission schools early in her career and later was a master teacher and curriculum coordinator, died of pneumonia Feb. 2 in Redlands. She was 92.
According to a newspaper article published when she was a teacher at Bryn Mawr School in the early 1940s, she was the first Latino teacher at that school. The Mission school district now part of the Redlands Unified School District at that time segregated Latino children, sending them to Bryn Mawr School, while the others went to Mission School.”
