“This spring the UF Center for Latin American Studies Bacardi Family Lecture Series focuses on “The State of Latino Studies.” The Sun kindly featured the series on Jan. 29, the day of the inaugural lecture. But the article failed to mention the theme of the series, and confused Latino Studies with both Latin Studies the study of the classical language and Latin American Studies the study of the geographical region.
Latino Studies refers to the interdisciplinary study of peoples of Latin American origin residing in the United States. This field emerged in the 1960s and 1970s in concert with African American Studies and Womens Studies. The establishment of academic programs focusing on Latinos as a whole reflects both the growth in the Latino population and its dispersion nationally, and the interest in comparative analyses of different Latino groups according to country of origin.”
