“Mary Alvarez Pearson wants you to meet Gabriella, her 18-inch-tall dream come true.

The Hispanic doll, made to Marys specifications, has straight black hair and bangs, big brown eyes that open and close, and a tan body — all vinyl, the better for giving a doll a bath. Her clothes are normal, not too fancy.

“I wanted to make sure when a Hispanic child looked at her, she could see herself,” said Mary, 49, who retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1999.”
