“In six years, Jose Velasquez went from a scared Spanish-speaking immigrant from El Salvador to a star Garinger High graduate who’s fluent in English.

In less than 30 seconds at his own graduation, he inadvertently sparked an “English-only” controversy in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

Velasquez said the Pledge of Allegiance in English at CMS’s first midyear graduation Monday. Then, at the organizers request, he repeated it in Spanish.”
