“The World Economic Forum WEF recently named Fernando Madeira, CEO of Terra Latin America, as a Young Global Leader. Madeira is among 250 appointees from 70 countries selected to form this year’s Forum of Young Global Leaders.
The leaders were selected by a jury headed by Queen Rania from Jordan. The jury included 34 global media leaders including Tom Glocer, CEO of Reuters, Hisashi Hieda, president of Fuji Television and Arthur Sulzberger, president and publisher of New York Times. As CEO of Terra Latin America, Madeira is responsible for the #1 Internet portal among Spanish and Portuguese speakers. Terra Networks has operations in 18 countries and more than one million employees worldwide. Terra.com is the U.S. Hispanic arm of the company and Fernando Rodriguez is the CEO for the Miami-based U.S. operations.
“We congratulate Madeira for receiving this prestigious recognition. In less than a year as CEO of Terra Latin America, Madeira has demonstrated superb leadership. There is no doubt that the same knowledge and expertise he has poured into the company will be used in his strategic thinking and tackling of global issues,” stated Rodriguez.
The Forum of Young Global Leaders was established in 2005 and is comprised of people who dedicate part of their time to jointly address problems in the world and who are committed to work collectively towards a better future.
Madeira began his career when he was 19 years old working in Silicon Valley, California where he developed an office automation platform for UNIX operating systems. In 1989, Madeira along with four other co-founders developed a platform for Internet access during the time when the Internet was at its early stages of development.
A decade later, Telefónica Group acquired their online work which was the foundation for what is now known as Terra Networks. Telefónica is one of the largest, integrated, global telecommunications companies, with a strong leadership position in the Spanish and Portuguese speaking world. Accordingly, a large percentage of Telefonica’s business is outside of Spain, the home market of Telefónica. Prior to being named CEO of Terra Latin America, Madeira was Director of Terra Networks, Brazil.
The Young Global Leaders include businesspeople, politicians, academicians, media professionals and community leaders under the age of 40. Honorees were selected from a pool of 4,000 distinguished candidates based on their professional achievements, strategic thinking, social responsibility and ability to face global challenges.”
