Knowledge is Power!
“In 2000, the Texas Education Agency discovered a secret weapon to help combat the high dropout rate of Latino students: Spanish class.
Under a program funded by the U.S. Department of Education, participating Texas school districts offer Advanced Placement AP Spanish to native-speaking eighth-graders in hopes of boosting their confidence and getting them to think about higher education five years in advance. “The course enhances their own sense of what they can do and achieve in school,” said Kelly Callaway, TEA director of advanced academics. “This opens the door to success.””
