“President George W. Bush stood before Vice President Cheney, members of Congress and distinguished guests Tuesday night to deliver the State of the Union Address. With millions of viewers watching President Bush proposed initiatives for 2007 on issues including immigration and economic reform.

During his State of the Union Address, President Bush called on Congress to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill that will secure our borders, create a temporary workers program and resolve the status of illegal immigrants who currently reside in the U.S. without hostility.

With Hispanics representing the fastest growing population in the U.S., immigration reform is an issue of utmost importance to our community. Currently over 56 percent of all immigrant workers in the U.S. are Hispanic and it is essential that we work with members of Congress to ensure a fair and realistic approach to the issue of immigration reform.

“As leaders of the Hispanic community, it is our responsibility to unite to support Comprehensive Immigration Reform,” said Massey Villarreal, USHCC Foundation Chairman. “I applaud President Bush for acknowledging the vital topic of immigration reform and for proposing that Congress pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill. The undocumented U.S. population stands at an estimated 10-12 million people and those immigrants contribute billions to our nation’s economy. It is imperative that we provide them legal means of entry into the United States while maintaining the security of our borders.”

The USHCC Foundation fully supports comprehensive immigration reform. We believe that it is possible to adopt a nondiscriminatory and effective program to secure our borders while providing immigrants with an outlet to legally work in the United States and the opportunity to continue to contribute to our nation’s prosperity. The USHCC Foundation will continue to play the role as a national convener of positive dialogue and idea creation in the arena of comprehensive immigration reform.
