University of Florida - Center for Latin American Studies announces Bacardi lectures

“The first speaker in the spring Bacardi Lecture Series is Jorge Duany, 2007 Bacardi Eminent Scholar in Latin American Studies at the University of Florida. Duany will talk on “Transnational Migration from the Hispanic Caribbean: Changing Settlement Patterns and Cultural Identities” at 4 p.m., Jan. 29 in the Keene Faculty Center.

The lecture series is hosted by the University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies with support from Bacardi Imports, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the state of Florida. The lectures, which are free and open to the public, are presented by distinguished Latino scholars from across the United States.

All lectures begin at 4 p.m. The other featured speakers and lecture dates are:

Miren Uriarte, of sociology and interim director, Gaston Institute for Latino Community Development and Public Policy, University of Massachusetts; Feb. 12, Ruth McQuown Room, Dauer Hall
Marí Cristina Garcí, of history, Cornell University; Feb. 26, Keene Faculty Center
Silvio Torres-Saillant, associate of English and director of Latino-Latin American Studies, Syracuse University; March 19, Rion Ballroom, Reitz Union
Edna Acosta-Belén, distinguished of Latin American, Caribbean and U.S. Latino Studies and Women’s Studies, University at Albany, SUNY; April 2, Rion Ballroom, Reitz Union
Louis DeSipio, associate of political science and director of /Latino Studies, University of California, Irvine; April 19, Friends of Music Room”
