“David Tovar passed a bag of plastic insects around a classroom last week, watching as Japanese beetles, ladybugs and arachnids piled up on his students desks.

“La hormiga, in Spanish,” Tovar said, twirling a plastic bug in the air. “In English, an ant. Say it after me.”

His 14 students, most of whom speak Spanish and work for landscaping companies, repeated the word in English several times. Next, they learned the words for antennae, thorax and other insect body parts.”
