Cultural coach: Breaking language barriers
Posted on: January 19th, 2007“I have a Hispanic employee who is very competent at her work, but often her heavy Spanish accent gets in the way. She speaks very quickly and peppers her sentences with Spanish terms in place of English words. Needless to say, I don’t always understand her, which just frustrates both of us
I used to interrupt her to ask her to repeat more slowly, but I think shes feeling singled out and embarrassed. We need to communicate in order to work together, but I dont want to appear to be prejudiced or a racist. Can you give me some advice?”
