rbd“Latino pop sensation RBD was selected from the many artists featured on Terra.com by the portal’s avid music enthusiasts, beating out household names such as Shakira, Thalia and Juanes. Terra.com launched Premios Terra a Lo Mejor de la MÚsica Latina to provide its visitors an online conduit to choose their favorite performer or group from among the year’s hottest Latino entertainers. The 2006 online competition drew close to 100,000 votes with RBD receiving 41,902 votes to claim the top prize.

The Mexican group RBD was formed relatively recently as part of a teen high school band within the Spanish-language telenovela Rebelde which ran from October 2004 through June 2006.Source: Wikipedia. The group has since soared in popularity and has produced five top-selling, Spanish language CDs. It is easy to understand their fast rise by watching their video Nuestro Amor on Terra TV. Additional facts such as RBD’s biography and news headlines are found on RBD’s artist page on Terra.com.

This year’s audience favorite is poised to conquer the English speaking audience with their recent crossover debut entitled Rebels. Other artists who received high percentages of online votes include David Bisbal and Ricky Martin.

“Terra.com’s Music (MÚsica) Channel has always been very popular due to in depth coverage and exclusive interviews with top entertainers. We are delighted to see such a high number of votes, and congratulate RBD. RBD is a relative newcomer in comparison to other candidates, yet our audience is fully aware of their talent and potential. This is a story in itself.” stated Fernando Rodriguez, CEO of Terra Networks.

Increased audience feedback among Hispanic youth, who represent the largest growing segment of the U.S. population, is reflected in the selection of RBD as the 2006 winner. The six figure vote count from Terra’s contest now in its 3rd year, is an indication of how subsequent generations of Internet users embrace non-traditional media. Terra’s very own award winning Music Channel Editor, Monica Godoy, was the originator of this contest, Premios Terra a Lo Mejor de la MÚsica Latina.
