“In welcoming the new 110th U.S. Congress, the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce USHCC, the leading advocate for the more than two million Hispanic-owned businesses in the United States, will unveil a bold legislative agenda that reflects the power, energy and impact Hispanics are having on Capitol Hill and state capitols across the country.
Some of the top issues included in the legislative agenda are comprehensive immigration reform, U.S.-Latin American relations including trade, SBA re-authorization, Health care and financial assistance for small businesses. The USHCC will officially unveil its legislative priorities for the new Congress during its 17th Annual USHCC Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. on March 5-7, 2007. This year’s Conference theme is “Advancing Latino Entrepreneurship””It’s Just Good Business,” underscoring the importance of educating members of Congress and advocating on behalf of the U.S. Latino entrepreneur on Capitol Hill.
The Legislative Conference brings together top Hispanic business leaders, Corporate America and influential government and political leaders from the White House and Congress to interact and discuss economic and political issues impacting Hispanic businesses and the nation.
“Immigration reform and small business assistance are vital to the growth and success of Hispanic businesses and the entire U.S. economy,” said USHCC Board of Directors Chair David C. Lizárraga. “Our government leaders must understand the impact the Hispanic entrepreneur and business owner has on the U.S. political, economic and cultural horizon and also the sound business sense it makes to work with Hispanics.”
The Conference will also provide a forum for these leaders to discuss new and innovative ways to harness the entrepreneurial spirit of the Hispanic business community through policy and advocacy. As the leading representative and strongest voice for more than two million Hispanic-owned businesses in the U.S., the USHCC plans to target SBA re-authorization as the premier topic to address during the Legislative Conference.
“The SBA is not just an agency for today; it is a growing and changing organization that can make a difference in the future,” said USHCC President and CEO Michael L. Barrera. “Everyone needs help to get started, and that is evident in the giants of today’s corporate world, like Under Armour and Colombia Sportswear””two businesses that received SBA assistance and now have thousands of employees. They started out as small businesses that needed SBA resources to reach the heights of success they enjoy today.”
Prominent leaders already invited include The Honorable George W. Bush, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi California, Sen. Barack Obama Illinois and Rep. Charles B. Rangel New York.
