“The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce USHCC, the leading advocate for the more than two million Hispanic-owned businesses in the United States, and its Board of Directors expressed concern on the urgent need for members of the new 110th Congress to fulfill their promise of implementing realistic and practical legislation for immigration reform.

“With all the challenges facing our country today, our newly elected leaders must overcome bipartisan obstacles and develop a comprehensive, realistic approach to addressing the pressing issue of immigration reform in the United States,” said USHCC Board of Directors Chairman David C. Lizárraga.

The USHCC issued a clarion call to the leadership and members of Congress to objectively evaluate their position on this timely U.S. issue and bring practical and plausible solutions to the table as the new Congress begins 2007. Immigration reform was a controversial and vital topic during the 2006 campaigns and elections, and the USHCC encourages the members of Congress to remember that as they begin to establish this year’s legislative agenda.

“We need a debate that will provide the nation with a genuine immigration reform compromise and that reflects a desire to balance national security with continued economic growth,” said USHCC President and CEO Michael L. Barrera. “The voters were clear that concrete solutions””like a guest-worker program””will do more to address this issue than use of concrete walls, and we will address this issue at our 2007 Legislative Conference, March 5-7, in Washington, D.C.”

The USHCC supports measures to keep the country and its borders safe, but also encourages channels and means that promote the growth and necessary expansion of the national economic security. It reminds Congress that those in a position to dictate the fate and future of the millions of workers and small businesses here should consider the practical, not just the easiest, solution for true and comprehensive immigration reform. “
