Hispanic group pushes bill that would alter local election method – White Plains, New York
Tagged: activist, New York, populationPosted on: January 16th, 2007“The system used by virtually all of New Yorks towns and villages to elect local officials suppresses minority candidates chances to win seats on local boards, lawmakers and activists seeking to overhaul the system claimed Monday.
At-large elections, in which members of village and town boards are elected from the entire municipal population instead of geographic districts, are used in nearly 1,500 municipalities throughout the state. Hispanic politicians and activists said the method hurts minorities; they want a district or ward system so that minority-dominated neighborhoods could stand a better chance of electing minorities to local boards.”
