Actress/singer Daphne Rubin-Vega is a two-time Tony nominee and Blockbuster Award winner who just released her much anticipated new album, Redemption Songs.
Tagged: MTV Tr3s, Panama, radio, Theater, UnivisionPosted on: January 16th, 2007The album is a vibrant collection of pop, Latin folk, rock and reggae influenced songs that are soulful, passionate and from the heart. The music was organically stewed from Daphne’s life composites – an album that Bjork could have made had she grown up in New York City doing theater- and also includes a few covers including the beautiful Silvio Rodríguez ballad, “En Estos Dias.”
With roles including the original Mimi in Rent, Magenta in The Rocky Horror Show, Conchita in Anna In The Tropics and Martirio in the Lincoln Center production of “Bernada Alba”, Daphne is unmistakenly one of the most recognizable Latinos on Broadway. In the early 90s, Daphne also took a pop-star turn when she became part of the girl group Pajama Party, with whom she shot to the top of the Billboard Dance Charts with the single “Yo No Se.”
The Panamanian born singer has deep roots in the Hispanic community, and received the HOLA (Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors) “Ilka Award” in 2004, the distinction of honor from the Panamanian consulate in 1996 for her work in Rent and a 2006 Bobby Capo Lifetime Achievement Award, granted each year by Governor Pataki to Hispanic artists in commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month. She has also been a long-standing standing supporter of the “Castillo Center’s All Stars Program’, which brings arts and education to teens and young adults in poor neighborhoods and is a catalyst for social change and responsibility.
Rubin-Vega is currently playing the role of Fantine in the Broadway revival of Les Miserables. Next up, she is set to star with Academy Award winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman in The Public Theater/LAByrinth production of Bob Glaudini’s Jack Goes Boating which begins in January. In support of Redemption Songs, you may have recently caught her interview and performance on MTV TR3S’ Radio TRL Latino, or if you live in the NYC area, on Univision’s “Noticias Al Despertar.” Daphne will also grace the cover of Urban Latino next month.
