“Originally from Cuba, Benzanilla is one of many women in the class that value the course as an expression of their Latino heritage. However, Shepro and her associate Isabel Navarro, both 20-year residents of Santa Clarita, also stressed that the group includes women of different ethnic backgrounds who have also come to appreciate the taste of Latino dance and culture from the classes.
As they laughed and talked outside the community center Wednesday night after their first session of the year, the women jokingly referred to their eclectic group as the “United Nations.”"
