“The crucial childhood memory for Mariela Ibáñez Griffor is of her grandfather burning books — because if the soldiers found them, the would be in grave danger. Even 11-year-old Marielas beloved books of poetry had to go on the pyre.

It was Sept. 11, 1973, and was gripped by a coup led by Gen. Augusto Pinochet. The event would be followed over the years by the torture and death of thousands, including the father of Mariela Ibáñez’s unborn child.

But Griffor, 45, will have the last word. She started Marick Press, which publishes poetry and other creative work.”
