Manuel Toro Remembered for Good Works

“The National Association of Hispanic Publications, Inc. regrets the loss of a premier college and excellent friend. Manuel A. Toro Sr., founder of the Spanish-language newspaper La Prensa de Orlando, NAHP Foundation Board Member, and former NAHP President passed away last Friday.

Toro died at his home in Altamonte Springs of congestive heart failure. He was a psychiatrist and worked for the tourism industry before he launched La Prensa in 1981. Besides establishing La Prensa, the oldest Spanish-language newspaper in central Florida with a weekly circulation of 40,000, Toro also started a Spanish-language business directory, helped set up Hispanic and Puerto Rican business chambers and was a strong advocate for Hispanics.

Funeral services took place at the Saint James Cathedral in Orlando on Monday, January 8th, 2007 at 9:30am.

“Manuel Toro was a leader in Florida, Puerto Rico and across our country on behalf of Hispanic media and his beloved Hispanic community”, said Eddie Escobedo, Chair of the NAHP Foundation.

“I am greatly saddened with this news. Don Manuel was a great role model and good friend to all of us in the media business,” said Tom Oliver, Executive Director of the NAHP and Foundation. “
