Salsa sings its way to global stardom
Tagged: Celia Cruz, CubaPosted on: January 5th, 2007“As a native New Yorker who has grown up thinking of salsa music as something that came out of the streets of New York via Cuba and Puerto Rico, its always been surprising how far the music travels. Sometime in the early 90s, reports began coming back from Europe that Germans and Swiss were dancing to salsa, and there was even a band from Japan called Orquesta de la Luz. During one concert at the New Jersey Meadowlands, when lead singer Nora performed a duet with the late Celia Cruz and was cheered wildly, the acceptance of salsa from faraway regions of the world was official.”
