South Division gets some help – Youth advocates from Latino Community Center a calming presence at MPS school – Milwaukee

“Three in the circle are students, members of different “sets” or gangs, discussing who “mean mugged” who in the lunchroom and why.

The other three work for the Latino Community Center. They too talk tough and straight, but theyre trying to resolve the dispute that nearly led to a fight. They offer unvarnished assessments about what happened and the serious consequences that could have resulted. They warn the students to be careful who they listen to. They try to infuse the girls with hope for their futures. “You are all beautiful young ladies. You are intelligent and youre going to be something,” said Naomi Perez, one of the youth advisers.”
