“You might call the trip that former state Sen. Martha Escutia and friend Angie Medina took to volunteer at a shelter for injured immigrants in Chiapas, Mexico, the good, the bad and the ugly.

The good was the immigrants who stay at the Jesus of the Good Shepherd Shelter have turned the place into a self-sufficient haven.

But many of these same immigrants - from Central America - have lost legs and arms in their attempt to ride trains through Mexico to the United States.

And the bad was the border. Escutia and Medina called it “the wild, wild south” after viewing and getting briefings on Mexican immigration policy.”
