“A student group at the heart of a feud between a Republican congressman and a civil rights organization has been denounced on conservative Web sites as a racist and separatist group.
But members of the group, known as MEChA, which has chapters at 400 universities and high schools across the country, say the charges are false and often propagated by anti-immigrant groups.
“Thats definitely absurd . . . just people trying to create drama,” said Omar Medina, a member of MEChA at Sonoma State University in California. MEChA helps students go to college and have pride in their culture, he added.”
