“Longtime University of Houston professor Tatcho Mindiola tells a wry story about his early struggles to turn a fledgling Center for Mexican American Studies into the slick, high-dollar operation it is today.

It was 1980. Sociology professor Mindiola had been appointed director of a center with a $5,000 annual budget and part-time secretary who often didn’t even show up. Undaunted, Mindiola invited the Mexican American Legislative Caucus to campus for a luncheon aimed at enlisting support.”
