Local authorities intrigued anew by option for illegal immigrants

“Rogers Mayor Steve Womack joined a growing number of elected officials when he asked the federal government to let his city’s police officers check the immigration status of people they encounter.

Called 287(g) after the section of federal immigration law that created it, the program Womack wants to join allows state and local officers to directly tap into Homeland Security databases to determine whether a person is legally in the country, instead of relying on backlogged Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.”
