Latinos welcome statue – Pittsburgh
Tagged: Mexico, Pennsylvania, Spanish-languagePosted on: December 11th, 2006“Members of Pittsburgh’s small-but-growing Latino community gathered Sunday to welcome a recent arrival from Mexico — a small statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
About 350 people gathered for a special Spanish-language Mass at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Beechview, which received the gift of a plaster-and-resin statue of “La Virgen,” a brown-skinned Mary figure considered the patroness of the Americas — particularly Mexico, where the faithful believe she appeared to an indigenous peasant nearly 500 years ago.”
