“Today, the House Republican Conference selected a new Ranking Member for the House of Representatives Committee on International Relations for the for 110th Congress, Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida.

When Ileana Ros-Lehtinen was elected to the House of Representatives in 1989, she became the first Hispanic woman and the first Cuban-American elected to the U.S. Congress. She is the current Chair of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and Central Asia, and previously served as Chair of the Africa, International Economic Policy and Trade Subcommittee and the International Operations and Human Rights Subcommittee.

Chairman Henry J. Hyde (R-IL), who is retiring from Congress this month after serving 32 years in the House of Representatives, said about the Conference’s selection of Rep. Ros-Lehtinen:

Ileana brings intelligence, leadership and enthusiasm to the important task of guiding the minority on the International Relations Committee. She also possesses the tremendous experience and creativity needed to make a serious impression on the direction of our foreign policy during this critical time in our nation’s history.”
