Illegal immigrants, the right to drive and the Real ID – California
Tagged: California, Real IDPosted on: December 8th, 2006“Oh, irony of ironies. When Republicans, trying to make life harder for illegal immigrants, pushed the Real ID Act through Congress last year, did anyone suspect that it could open the door for illegal residents in California to get driver’s licenses?
The law requires that for a driver’s license to be recognized for federal identification purposes ”” the most common is for boarding a plane ”” it must be based on various convincing documents, including a verified Social Security number, showing that the holder is a citizen or legal resident. States can still issue licenses to others, but those can’t be used as a federally approved “Real ID” document.”
