“Last week I, along with five other journalists, took what was called a “familiarization” trip to Mexico ”” essentially a five-day immersion crash course into the history, culture and faith of the Mexican people and their country. We flew from New York to Mexico City on Tuesday and spent the better part of the next week with barely an opportunity to catch our collective breaths as we tried to absorb as much as possible about the country during the few precious days of our visit.

On the first day, several people asked if I had ever been to Mexico before. Yes, I said. I visited Tijuana last year. And honestly, though I didn’t tell them, that experience didn’t exactly have me lining up for the next trip south of the border. But, by the time I was clearing customs back on American soil this past Sunday, I had stopped considering Tijuana as the “real” Mexico and began ranking this trip as my first.”
