“Lexicon Marketing Group, developer of Inglés sin Barreras, the world’s best selling video-based English learning program, announced today they will kick off their new Sin Barreras Foundation, benefiting Hispanic communities across the U.S., on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. during the Chicano Youth Leadership Conference in Malibu. Valeria Rico, President and CEO of Lexicon Marketing Group will discuss Lexicon’s vision for the Sin Barreras Foundation and present a $50,000 check to the CYLC for the creation of an additional conference to be held in May of 2007.

“Creating the Sin Barreras Foundation has been a true labor of love,” said Valeria Rico, President and CEO of Lexicon Marketing Group. “We are constantly inspired by the aspirations and dreams of our Hispanic customers. Their optimism, resiliency and determination to believe in a better future are what Lexicon and the Sin Barreras Foundation are all about.”

The Sin Barreras Foundation will focus on helping the Hispanic community in the areas of education, health and financial prosperity and will be the umbrella for initiatives that fall into these areas.

Due to the current crisis faced by Hispanic high school and college-bound students, the Foundation will primarily concentrate on education. In November 2006, the Sin Barreras Foundation awarded college scholarships to four young Hispanics as part of the Foundation’s Jose Luis Nazar Scholarship Program created for students who clearly demonstrated strong academic potential, deep commitment toward the Hispanic community and pressing financial need. All student recipients are children of immigrants. According to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund Institute, the high school completion rate for Hispanics is only 64% versus 92% for white children. Additionally, out of 100 Hispanic students enrolled in elementary school, only 6 will obtain their bachelor’s degree.

In May 2007, the Sin Barreras Foundation will sponsor a retreat in the Chicano Youth Leadership Conference series which has prepared several generations of Latino leaders over the past 40 years. Alumni of the conference include the Mayor of Los Angeles, a State Supreme Court Justice, several LAUSD superintendents, members of the United States Congress, county supervisors and a growing number of university professors. The retreat is a unique opportunity to encourage young Latinos to value themselves and their cultural heritage, and to inspire them to continue investing in their education and in their futures.

In November of 2006, the Foundation was an official sponsor of “A Day of Education” – Practical Tools to Increase Latino College Access and Achievement held by the Tomas Rivera Policy Institute in association with the Center for Urban Education from the University of Southern California. The conference addressed the urgent importance of increasing Latino college access and achievement and the vital role community members play in affecting the change. “
