“Crown Royal and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) announced today the three Los Angeles recipients of the Crown Royal Excellence Awards at a ceremony held at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. Developed last year to honor a new generation of outstanding Latinos making a difference in their respective communities, this year’s awards were also presented to three honorees in Chicago and three in Phoenix.

The recipients of the 2006 Crown Royal Excellence Awards in Los Angeles are:
Aide Castro, Edward Acevedo, and Robert Herrera.

“Crown Royal is proud to honor these individuals whose achievements make Hispanic communities across the U.S. a better place to live,” said Giovanni Sgro, Crown Royal multicultural brand manager. “With these awards we’re recognizing those Latinos who are contributing to the dynamic growth of these cities.”

About the honorees:

Aide Castro is a real estate entrepreneur and salon beauty owner who created Lynwood’s home buying seminars where she offers free credit counseling and helps families achieve their dreams of home ownership. Castro serves as commissioner of the Lynwood Block Grant Advisory Board, and is also a board member of the Lynwood Athletics Community Services. She is a member of the Lynwood Chamber of Commerce and was recently named executive director of the Center for Community and Family Services Inc.

Edward Acevedo is a community activist known for his commitment to enhancing educational opportunities. He is a teacher for special education in the Long Beach Unified School District and is the founder of Open Hands of Long Beach, a grassroots organization devoted to strengthening families through early literacy and anti-gang initiatives, as well as programs for the elderly.

Robert Herrera is an activist devoted to educating others about human rights. Robert continues to work hard to improve the achievement level of local youth and has been recognized for his leadership in gang prevention and immigration reform advocacy. Robert is currently LULAC’s Vice President of the Great Long Beach Council 3088 and treasurer of District 7.

The award recipients were nominated by an executive board of LULAC and were selected based on their advocacy and commitment to issues of long standing importance to Latinos. All honorees in each city represent accomplished young Latinos who are helping to improve the lives of Hispanics early in their careers.

“Since the organization’s inception, LULAC has worked to advance the quality of life for Latinos through a number of successful programs. The award recipients have demonstrated great commitment to the Hispanic community, and we are pleased Crown Royal recognizes their efforts and in doing so is encouraging Hispanics to get involved,” said Tomas Gonzales, District VII Director, California LULAC.

“We at Crown Royal, like these individuals, believe in giving back in a meaningful way,” said Sgro. “It is through these programs that we are able to communicate the importance of responsibility.”

Each of the award recipients received a custom-made ring crafted by celebrity jewelry designer Michael Spirito, of Exhibitionist, NYC. Crown Royal selected Spirito’s crown-shaped design to symbolize distinction as well as to celebrate the leadership exhibited by the deserving honorees. “
