“A glow-in-the-dark Virgin of Guadalupe. A bag of cinnamon churros. A Mexican telenovela couple kissing while trying to kill each other. These are the paintings that have made Phoenix artist Teresa Villegas part of contemporary Mexican pop culture.

In 2000, the Phoenix artist created 54 oil-on-wood pieces that reflect her vivid Mexican folk art twist on the 100-year-old Mexican bingo game, Loteria. Titled “La Loteria: An Exploration of Mexico,” the exhibit struck the hearts of lovers of Latin art in Mexico and the United States. So much that Don Clemente Gallo S.A. de C.V., creator of the original game, used artwork from the exhibit to update the game, El Nueva Versíon de La Loteria. “
