El Hispano News 20th Anniversary Celebration- “Parents Step Ahead’ Program – Dallas, Texas
Tagged: AT&T, aztec, children, Latina Style Magazine, Mariachi, newspaper, outreach, parents“In celebration of its 20th Anniversary and the inaugural year of the “Parents Step Ahead” program, Dallas-based El Hispano News will host the “El Hispano News 20th Anniversary Gala and “Parents Step Ahead’ Awards Ceremony,” on December 7th, 2006 at the Westin City Center in Dallas, TX. The “Parents Step Ahead” Program is a collaborative initiative with the White House on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, the Dallas Independent School District (DISD), and the National Association of Hispanic Publications Foundation (NAHPF). The program’s mission, to educate, enable, and empower Hispanic parents to understand and to take a proactive role in the personal and educational development of their children, serves as the foundation for this unique educational and community outreach initiative with the vision of becoming a national program.
The “Parents Step Ahead” Program consisted of a series of seminars open to the public. This year’s events were held at the following three elementary schools, reaching predominantly Hispanic parents.
– John W. Runyon Elementary School- September 30, 2006
– Leila P. Coward Elementary School- October 21, 2006
– Julian T. Saldivar Elementary School- November 4, 2006During the Awards Ceremony, six parents will be awarded the “Parents Step Ahead Parent of the Year”, selected by a committee comprised of local, corporate, and community leaders. In addition to participation at each event, both parents and children were required to submit an essay outlining why they should be selected as Parent of the Year, and eligible for a prize package including a home computer system. The awards will be presented by representatives of the following event sponsors: American Airlines, Wal-Mart, UnitedHealthcare, Coors Brewing Company, AT&T, and Pinnacle.
Rafael Colón, President and Founder, Voices Internacional will serve as the event’s emcee, and Armando Guzmán, Correspondent, Producer & Anchorman of Azteca America will deliver the keynote address. Other featured speakers include: Dr. Elba Garcia, Deputy Mayor Pro Tem, City of Dallas, Dr. Michael Hinojosa Frank Gomez, Executive Director, Corporate Communications, ETS, and Robert E. Bard, President, LATINA Style Magazine. Post Gala entertainment will feature Mariachi Mexicanisimo.
Founded in 1986, El Hispano News is considered one of the Dallas/Ft. Worth pioneer newspaper published in Spanish and one of the most widely read newspaper by the Hispanic community. In addition to weekly news, the HTMC program is designed to reach the Hispanic community during the most important holidays.
