“Among the Valley’s predominantly Mexican-American population, alcoholism is becoming progressively more predominant, local officials say. The region’s outpatient programs are overflowing, and patients often must wait for months for a slot in a residential facility.

“Alcohol abuse among Hispanics is extremely prevalent,” said Eduardo Olivarez, CEO of the Hidalgo County Health Department. “And there are not a lot of resources for treatment here. ”¦ Even though we have the population of an urban area, we don’t have the medical or drug-treatment infrastructure ”” not for the working poor.”"
