“Douglas rancher Roger Barnett, who gained notoriety because of his activism against illegal immigration, has lost a jury trial and was ordered to pay $98,000 to a Mexican-American family he confronted with an assault rifle.

The civil jury in Bisbee late Wednesday found in favor of the family of Ronald Morales of Douglas, who sued over the Oct. 30, 2004, incident. Morales, his father, two daughters and a friend in a hunting party were accused by Barnett of trespassing on his ranch.
