Pitbull is the top dog of Miami-Cuban rap

Tagged: , ,

“Twenty-three years ago, Al Pacino did a fair job at portraying a Miami mobster with a thick Spanish accent in the movie “Scarface.” These days, we have Pitbull (Armando Perez) mobbing in a more authentic way, representing the wave of Miami Cuban emigres known as los Marielitos, on his second album, “El Mariel” (TVT Records).

“El Mariel” boasts a new and diversified Pitbull, one who is as intent on paying tribute to his Cuban roots as he is to landing high-profile guest stars. Most of the rhythmic grooves he raps over have some sort of Afro-Cuban flavor, and Spanglish is freely used in a way that outdistances most of his Latino rap competitors.”
