Almodovar puts Cruz in firm control in “Volver’

“If you don’t read in other languages, it’s difficult to really grasp what the fancy people are talking about when they rhapsodize about, say, how much better Flaubert’s “Madame Bovary” is in the original French. But if you want a lesson in what can be lost in translation, Pedro Almodovar’s “Volver” gives a vivid demonstration. Not only is Penelope Cruz a radically different – better – actress when she’s acting in her native language, she actually seems more beautiful in Spanish.”
