Transitions Optical Launches eyedidntknowthat.com in Spanish

Tagged: , ,

“One in five Hispanics suffer from cataracts and have higher prevalence rates of early age-related macular degeneration. With the need to raise awareness about eye health to the Hispanic community, Transitions Optical launched its Spanish version of eyedidntknowthat.com, a Web site devoted to teaching people of all ages about the sense of sight and how to maintain life-long healthy vision.

When visitors browse through the pages of eyedidntknowthat.com, they will discover alone or with their families, interactive information about how the eyes work as well as a wide array of subjects from eye ailments, tips on how to know if you need glasses, fact or fiction about the eyes and a wealth of resources for parents and teachers.

“Transitions Optical is committed to providing resources to educate the Hispanic community about how to promote and maintain eye health,” said Martha Rivera, Hispanic segment market manager, Transitions Optical. “In an effort to reach as much of the Hispanic population as possible and lessen any language barriers, we will continue to strive to provide educational resources that are translated in both English and Spanish,” Rivera added.

Through eyedidntknowthat.com, Hispanics will now be able to learn why prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) impacts the eyes and how it may contribute to early cataract formation and macular degeneration, among other conditions.

“I teach my patients the importance of protecting their eyes from the year-round dangers of UV radiation. Wearing lenses that block 100% UV radiation will also help to reduce glare and improve visual acuity. An excellent and convenient choice is photochromics, like Transitions(R) Lenses, that automatically adjust their level of darkness in the presence of UV radiation,” said Dr. Madeline Romeu, O.D., and F.A.A.O, and spokesperson for the educational program led by Transitions Optical. “Eyedidntknowthat.com is a great resource for Hispanics as it allows them to learn from the comfort of their homes and educates them about the latest information in eye health and steps they can take to better care for their eyes, including scheduling a yearly eye examination,” said Dr. Romeu.

The Eye Didn’t Know That! Program was developed by a team of eyecare professionals and science and education experts offering free educational materials, interactive games and traveling exhibit. In 2005, the exhibit toured 12 science centers across North America and helped to educate more than 175,000 people on the importance of eye health. Web site visitors can still experience the exhibit by taking a virtual tour.
