“Three years ago the school pioneered a new approach to the traditional English-as-a-second-language program as a way to boost parental involvement at the campus. The program, called Learning English Among Friends, brings together community organizations and Baylor University staff and students to address the needs of parents who traditionally have been absent from their children’s education.

LEAF has become an integral part of the largely Hispanic South Waco neighborhood that surrounds César Chávez, where school officials estimate 70 percent of the parents cannot read, write or speak English.”
