“Those early years, when the couple were here illegally, would later inspire their youngest child, 17-year-old Gustavo Jimenez Jr., to follow his gut one Sunday afternoon in late March. As he cruised MySpace.com, he found inspiration.

He read about harsh penalties proposed in Congress against illegal immigrants and those who helped them. He looked through a slide show depicting an immigrant march of 500,000 people wearing white and flowing through downtown L.A. Along with the photos was a post by a California teen urging others to join the national high school walkout set for the following day.

“You hear about walkouts, but nobody really does them,” Gustavo told me recently. “But the main thing that kind of got my attention were the pictures. If California is trying so hard, I thought, well, we should try to do something here.”"
