“Hispanic enrollment is growing 20 percent per year, but school officials say few Hispanic students participate in extracurricular activities. Soccer is the exception and is the popular activity among Hispanics in Decatur’s secondary schools.

“Unfortunately, they seem reluctant to participate in the other activities,” Brookhaven Middle School Principal Larry Collier said. “They tend to stay together as a group, and rarely do they step out of their comfort zone.”"
