of Florida is expected to be elected general chairman of the Republican National Committee in January, party officials said Monday. That would apparently make him the first Hispanic leader of the party and address concerns among Republican strategists that the party’s standing among had been hurt in the fight over immigration.

Mr. Martinez, 60, who will not step down from the Senate, will serve as the public face of the party ”” raising money, appearing on television and helping to rebuild the party after its losses in the election last week, officials said. Mike Duncan, who has been general counsel of the committee since 2002, will be named chairman, serving under Mr. Martinez and in charge of the day-to-day operations of the committee.”
