“Mental-health experts and patients say there still is a stigma associated with Latinos getting treated for mental-health illnesses. Experts point to other issues, such as lack of health insurance, and culture and language barriers, as reasons why some Latinos do not seek treatment.

Dr. Esperanza Diaz, a psychiatrist at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey who runs the Clinica Latina facility on New Street in New Brunswick, said Latinos, who typically are Catholic or Christian, may hold beliefs that they could “cure” themselves, or their faith will help them combat mental illness.”
