Knowledge is Power!
“On Monday, Austin authorities launched a campaign, paid for through a U.S. Department of Justice grant, aimed at spreading the message to Spanish speakers that help is available through social service organizations, churches and police.
Called “Basta Ya,” Spanish for “enough,” the effort also seeks to get more victims or witnesses to come forward without fear of questions about their immigration status.
“Immigration status does not play a role with police investigations in the city of Austin,” police spokesman Kevin Buchman said, and investigators do not ask victims or witnesses whether they are in the United States legally.”
