Knowledge is Power!
“My compadrito Sedano, in his last post mentioned being weary of the question “What is a Chicano?” Well Sedanito, here’s my answer to that wearying question.
As most of you know, I’m a danzante Azteca and love to educate about danza means and how important it is. Danzantes have a different view on what most people percieve, believe or assume about certain things. In short, we have our own version of history that is not usually known outside the danza circulo. One of those things is our meaning or definition of the word Chicano. Originally, Mexico (Mejico - the Spanish pronounciation) was Mexico (Meseehco - the indigenous Nahuatl pronounciation). The conquering Spaniards weren’t about to try and pronounce the beautiful and flowery Nahuatl, why bother? They didn’t just rape our people and our culture, they raped language as well. Anyway, the people were known as Mexicanos (Meh-shee-canos). Doesn’t it sound like Meh - chicanos? There you go. Mexico means the navel of the moon which to us means Mother Earth. “
