Loving spirits greet cemetery visitors on Dí de los Muertos

“My paternal grandfather was sitting in his favorite chair, sipping a mug of beer, and my abuelita was refrying beans and patting out corn tortillas when we arrived Wednesday afternoon.

My abuelo, Erasmo Portillo Jurado, a large man with a soft face, greeted us. My aunt, Lupe Portillo Terrazas, and uncle, Primitivo Portillo, were there as well.

Their faces lit up. It had been a year since our last visit.”
