This year’s Latin Grammy nominees are a lot like last year’s

“If this year’s nominations for the Latin Grammys seem a bit like those of last year, it’s because they are. Like 2005 — and the year before that — the nominations were dominated by commercial Latin pop. Even in categories like Latin jazz, salsa and merengue, radio-friendly music seems to be everywhere.

This year is deja vu all over again, and that’s because those who organize the 7-year-old awards ceremony are more concerned with television ratings than anything else. Even when the awards ceremony will air on Spanish-language Univision, rather than on CBS as in the past, ratings mean money. Money is what the Latin Grammy are all about.”
