“She is one of the increasing number of Latin American immigrants or their children living in the Bluegrass and going to college. It’s a step that could improve the career opportunities for young Hispanics. The University of Kentucky reported a dramatic increase in Latino freshman enrollment, an all-time high of 57, up from 37 last year.

Now 21, Hernandez is one of an estimated 18 Latino students at Transylvania, where she is studying Spanish literature. She is paying for college with student loans and through a work-study job in the university’s language lab, where she works for lab director Lisa Contreras, above left.”
