“Rowland Heights resident Maria Contreras-Sweet has served as a Cabinet member for former Gov. Gray Davis, worked as a corporate executive and started her own companies.

But her grandmother was never impressed with her status, telling her, “It’s not in the titles you hold, it’s what you do with the titles in helping others that matters to me,” Contreras-Sweet said. “I try to add a sense of giving back.”

One example is her involvement in creating HOPE, Hispanas Organized for Political Equality, which helps girls develop role models.”
